Chromium Flashcards
Why is chromium significant to humans?
required for the biological processes of carb and lipid metabolism.
What the the 3 sites where Cr3+ is concentrated in the body?
Liver, kidney and muscle.
________ is the principle carrier protein for chromium.
Transferrin
How is chromium stored?
Stored with chromodulin which is a Low molecular weight chromium binding substance.
What is the proposed role of chromium?
Improves insulin sensitivity by enhancing insulin binding, increases insulin receptor number, and increases B-cell sensitivity.
Does chromium improve post prandial glucose response for all groups?
No, mainly for obese/already unhealthy groups.
What condition can Cr improve?
Pre diabetes or T2D by increasing insulin sensitivity.
List 2 foods high in Cr
broccoli and tomatoes
How well is Cr absorbed?
Not very well at all, 0.4-2.5%
What is the AI for Cr
Its just less than Se at around 20-30ug for adults and almost 2x for P/L
What can Cr deficiency lead to?
Impaired glucose tolerance and elevated cholesterol and TGs.
More severe = nerve and brain disorders (TPN diets)
What is the most bioavailable form of Cr?
Chromium picolinate
What is the UL?
There is NO UL for Cr3+ (since unlikely to get enough from diet)
