Chromatography Flashcards
1
Q
What is paper chromatography used for?
A
Separate mixtures of soluble substances.
2
Q
What is the solvent also known as?
A
The mobile phase- this is when the solvent moves along the strip of paper and carries the different substances at different speeds.
3
Q
What does the paper contain (phase)?
A
The paper contains the stationary phase, through which the dissolved substance moves
4
Q
How can the apparatus of chromatography be set up?
A
- Draw pencil line and put labels for each substance
- Put this above the solvent (eg:water)
- Put lid on top to prevent evaporation
5
Q
What can we interpret from chromatography?
A
- Pure or impure substance (one spot is pure)
- What substances a mixture is made up of
6
Q
How do you calculate the Rf value?
A
Distance travelled by substance
——————————————
Distance travelled by solvent
(Note this value should be less than 1)
