Why was gold an important motivating factor?
The amount of wealth a country had was measured by the gold and silver, bullion, it had. Bullionism states a nation can only prosper at another’s expense.
Why was god an important motivating factor?
There was a great desire to spread Christianity in foreign lands.
Why was glory a motivating factor?
There was a great desire for fame and popularity in Europe.
Why was the renaissance a motivating factor?
It lead to an increasing sense of nationalism, searching for new land to increase resources and wealth. New scientific and technological discoveries paved the way for voyages into a new world
Why was mercantilism a motivating factor?
All European nations believed that all wealth from a colonized country should go to its motherland.
Why was developments in technology/navigation a motivating factor?
Developments in technology made Columbus voyages possible.
What were some useful tools which included ship navigation improvements?
The compass, quadrant, hourglass and sundial.
Why was technology important?
The printing press invented in 1450 allowed many copies of books and detailed maps to be printed.
Why was developments in gunpowder/weaponry important?
Because it allowed Europeans to carry muskets and pistols, ensuring their safety at all times.

So that navigation became more accurate.

larger ships were built with several decks to carry larger amounts of goods.
Why was the improvement in cartography important?
Improvement in cartography led to accurate maps on the known world.

High prices and danger made Europeans look for a route to the indies that would be more safe.
Why was the desire to find a sea route to India, China and the East Indies a motivating factor?
The Europeans desire for greater profits from the trade of cotton, silk, precious stones, exotic spices and enslaved persons forced them to find a sea route.
