describe the pharisees
When Jesus was living in Palestine, there was a group of people called the Pharisees. People saw them as the ‘cream’ of Judaism. Ordinary people looked up to them as leaders. Even though they were laymen ( not priests) the Pharisees claimed to be more religious than most people and they believed that men would only be allowed into the Kingdom of Heaven if they obeyed hundreds of religious rules. The Pharisees controlled the Synagogue. They wanted to keep the Jewish religion pure but kept themselves apart from ordinary Jews who were not so devout (holy). They believed that religious rules could change over time. The Pharisees rejected Roman rule and believed the Messiah would free them.
