Christmas Carrol Flashcards
Who does Scrooge Represent?
The Rich
What is the quote that represents scrooge being lonely?
What does it represent ?
“as solitary as an oyster”
Method- Simile
This is telling us he is isolated from society and is very secretive.
Oyster shell is sharp and dangerous but inside it holds a pearl which could symbolize Scrooge’s heart.
Quote that tells us about Scrooges temperature.
“He carried his own low temperature around”
Quote about Fred being unchanged; benevolent.
“I mean to give him the same chance every year, whether he likes it or not, for I pity him.”
Shows Fred’s unrelenting care for Scrooge despite the way he treats him.
The pity is a absolute juxtaposition to the way scrooge treats those different (the poor)
Quote on Tiny Tim’s hand?
“Withered little hand”
method symbolism oxymoron
He is the mouthpiece for the Victorian children.
Withered connotes that he is clutching on the edge of life and barley surviving.
the adjective little describes how small frail and helpless Tim is in society and he is included in what scrooge classes as “surplus population”
Quotes about ghost of Christmas Past and the light.
“bright clear jet of light”
Dickens uses the symbol of this light to show how uncomfortable Scrooge is in the presence of this ghost.
The metaphor of light conveys purity, goodness and – often associated with the innocence of childhood - a truth the Ghost is bringing to Scrooge.
Quotes about ghost of Christmas Past and the child / old man juxtaposition.
“It was a strange figure – like a child: yet not so like a child as like an old man”
The ghost is young in the sense of Scrooges childhood, yet old in the sense of the fact the memories are pierced and scorned.
The adjective ‘strange’ shows how dulled the memories are.
What does he give scrooge at the end of stave 3 ?
“This boy is Ignorance. This girl is Want. Beware them both”
beware ‘Ignorance’ more as Dickens wanted to promote the power of education and the need to help children question exploitation. This would then help the poorest consider their ‘Want’ or needs more.
What did the ghost repeat that scrooge said in stave 1.
“If he be like to die, he had better do it, and decrease the surplus population.”
Parallelism with stave 1
Thomas Malthus words
The pronoun ‘he’ objectifies Tiny Tim and presents him as double worthless as a working-class child and also a cripple unable to work in a factory.
What is the quote about the ghost of Christmas present approaching.
“The Phantom slowly, gravely, silently approached”
The 3 adverbs slow it down to a solemn.
The ghosts silence symbolizes death.
What was the ghost of Christmas present shrouded in?
”shrouded in a deep black garment”
The ghost doesn’t wear the festive robe its two predecessors did. Shows how he is the symbol of death and he is coming to him giving scrooge 1 last chance.
The adjectives ‘deep black’ link to Scrooge’s afterlife which will be hellish and empty unless he changes. This phrase is also slow and builds on the sinister tone.
Quote about stave 1, Marley entering covered in something.
“I wear the chain I forged in life”
Chain metaphor shows how Marley accepts his mistakes as a moneylender and regrets his greed.
Industrial verb, ’forged’ connotes of hammering and shaping strong materials and conveys how his exploitation of the poor in society was relentless
Quote on belles house.
‘Not very large or handsome but full of comfort.’
The personification suggests that Belle and her family have little money but they have each other at Christmas. The adjective ‘handsome’ makes me think about the way Victorians judged on appearances and measured morality by looks. This was something Dickens rejected.
Belle and scrooge were together but scrooge loved money too much.
Fezziwig fuel quote
‘fuel was heaped upon the floor.’
This metaphor reflects how generous Fezziwig is as an employer.
It is a direct contrast with Scrooge’s ‘very small fire’ in Stave 1.
He is very generous and likes to give and doesn’t really concern himself about money.
A quote about the Cratchits small pudding.
“Oh, a wonderful pudding…a small pudding for a large family.”
Humour and hyperbole emphasizes their joy of the simple pleasures, contrasting with scrooges misery. The Cratchits still have an abundance of love and joy in each other’s company.
Dickens wants us to reflect on the inequality in society.
