Context

A
  • 1824 – in London his father, John, Charles Dickens’s father was locked in a prison for failing to pay his debts.
  • Charles – age 11 – was sent to a blacking factory, with awful conditions.
  • He lived separated from his family, as they all had gone to prison apart from him.
  • After 3 years he returned to school, but he never forgot the experience.
  • Dickens became a lifelong supporter of the poor.
  • Eliza Burgess – found guilty of killing her newborn child, Dickens couldn’t sleep the night she was found guilty, Dickens resolved to fight on her side, and they won.
  • Dickens’s sister-in-law died. He has many characters that suffer the same disease she did, but they never die.
