Christmas Flashcards
Why is an atom always neutral
An atom is always neutral because it has EQUAL numbers of positive protons and negative electrons and the charges cancel each other out
Fill in table
Parts Mass Charge
Proton 1 +1
Neutron 1 0
Electron 0 -1
What is an isotope
An isotope is an atom of the same element but which has a different number of neutrons therefore a different mass number
What is an element compound and mixture
THEY ARE SUBSTANCES AS WELL
What is an ion
An ion is an element that has lost or gained electrons to become positively or negatively charged
What is ionic bonding
When a metal and a non metal lose or gain electrons to get a full outer shell an ionic compound is held together by electrostatic forces of attractions between positive metals and negative non metals
When ionic bonding if 2 or more of one element is needed you put
The number need up a height eg. BFe^2
Nitrogen oxide
NO
Carbon dioxide
CO2
Methane
CH4
Hydrogen chloride
HCl
Carbon monoxide
CO
Sulphur dioxide
SO2
When covalent bonding remember to add
Diagrams eg. H .x- H and dots around where the spare electrons are ••••
What is the law of conservation of mass
Mass can not be created or destroyed it can only be converted to one form to another
