Omnibenevolent
The state of being all-loving and infinitely good - a characteristic often attributed to God.
Omnipotent
The all-powerful, almighty and unlimited nature of God.
Trinity
The three persons of God: God the Father, the Son, The Holy Spirit.
Incarnation
God becoming human in the form of Jesus.
Atonement
The belief that Jesus’ death on the cross healed the rift between humans and God.
Resurrection
The belief that Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday, conquering death.
Sacraments
An outward sign of an invisible and inward blessing of God, for example baptism, Eucharist.
Evangelism
Preaching of the gospel to others with the intention of converting them to the Christian faith.
Monotheism
The belief in one true God.
Messiah
‘Anointed one’, a title given to Jesus by the early Christians who believed that Jesus’ life had been foretold in the Old Testament.
Salvation
Being saved from sin, by Jesus’ death.
Ascension
When Jesus returned to heaven 40 days after his resurrection.
Eschatology
Study of the end of time, last things; death, judgement, heaven, hell.
Judgement
Christians believe that God will judge them based on their actions during their life.
Parable
A short, often simple story which contains a deeper meaning.
Purgatory
Catholics believe that people need to be purified of their sin before entering heaven, this occurs in purgatory - a sort of waiting area.
Literal Interpretation
Believing that the creation story is true in every detail.
Symbolic Interpretation
Believing that the creation story is metaphorical in nature and that the account needs to be interpreted. Not every detail is literally true.
The Fall
When sin entered the world because Adam and Eve disobeyed God.
Afterlife
The belief that life exists after physical death.
Eucharist
Communion or the last supper, when the Christians partake in bread and wine which symbolise Jesus’ body and blood, to remember his death.
Pilgrimage
A journey to a place of religious significance, usually to show religious devotion.
Persecution
Persistent cruel treatment, often due to religion or belief.
