What is Baptism?
An initiation into the Christian community.
When is Baptism carried out?
Infants - Catholic, Orthodox, Anglican.
Pentecostal - members baptised as an adult having made their own decision.
What are the water-related rituals in Baptism?
Immersion: submersion of entire body in water - symbolises being surrounded with the beliefs of the Christian community.
Aspersion: sprinkling of water on head.
How do Orthodox churches celebrate Baptism?
Celebrate baptism within a wider rite of initiation including anointing and Eucharist.
Immersing the child three times into a baptismal font - parallels the belief in the Trinity.
How does Baptism reflect the belief in the Nature of God and the Trinity?
When adherent is immersed/aspersed it is administered in the “name of Father, Son and Holy Spirit.”
On the day of ones Baptism, the three divine persons takes residence in the soul for the first time.

Through Baptism Christians become “temples of the Holy Spirit,” (1 Corinthians).

Water symbolises purification and cleansing - considered an act of redemption for all of humanity.
Symbolic of ones old life dying - then required to “live a new life in Christ,” (Romans 6).
How does Baptism reflect the belief in Salvation?
Water represents the cleansing and ‘saving’ from original sin.
The adherent is at the beginning of their journey of faith to build God’s kingdom.
What do Protestant Churches believe in relation to Salvation?
Baptism is a symbolic expression of salvation - individual needs to further be a good person of faith.
What is the significance of Baptism for the individual?
Signifies their step towards god and living as a Christian adherent.
Joins and contributes to the formation of church community.
Catholics + Anglicans - Communion and Confirmation affirm one’s Baptism.
What is the significance of Baptism for the community?
Witness the spreading of the gospel. - “Go and make disciples of all nations” (Matthew 28).
Godparents promise to welcome the person and encourage faith.
Experience sense of community via Sunday service.
