Belief in one God
Holy
Special and sacred. Separate and set apart for a special purpose by God.
Benevolent
All loving all good
Justice
What is right and fair according to the law. Making up for a wrong that has been committed.
Trinity
Three persons in the one God. Father, Son and Holy Spirit. All separate but one being.
Son of God
Title used for Jesus it shows the special relationship between God and Jesus
Afterlife
Christians believe follows life on earth.
Ressurection
Rising from the dead (Jesus at Easter)
Judgement
Decisions will be made on our actions and thoughts. God will reward or punish.
Heaven
State of eternal happiness in the presence of God
Hell
Place of eternal suffering or where God is not.
Day of judgement
The world will end and every soul will be judged by God and rewarded or punished.
Purgatory
Souls are cleansed by fire so they can get to heaven
Satan
The Devil. Power and source of evil
Incarnation
Literally ‘In the flesh’. The belief that Jesus is both fully God and fully human.
Crucifixion
Roman method of killing. Criminals are fixed to a cross. Jesus was killed by crucifixion on Good Friday
Ascension
When Jesus’ resurrected body went to heaven.
Sin
Action or thought that separates humans from God. Behaviour that goes against God’s laws or moral principles.
Original Sin
St Augustine said we are born with an urge to do the wrong thing and go against God.
Salvation
The belief that Jesus saves Christians from death, judgement and hell. Saving the soul, freedom from sin and entering heaven.
Grace
Undeserved gift or generosity. Jesus’ gift of forgiveness to the world is an act of grace. God’s love for humans which does not need to be earned.
Atonement
Putting right the relationship between God and people, through the life death and resurrection of Jesus.
Law
System of rules enforced by the state (faith group if religious laws e.g. adultery).
Blasphemy
Religious offence. Claiming to be God when you’re not.
Forgiveness
Showing grace and mercy and pardoning someone for doing something wrong.
Mass
Ceremony also called eucharist
