What does ‘cohabit’ mean?
A couple living together and having a sexual relationship without being married to one another.
Give 1 reason why people might choose to live together before being married?
- To see if they get on with each other before deciding to get married.
- They do not see the need to have a ceremony to show their commitment to one another.
- They do not want to commit to a lifelong relationship.
Give 1 reason why people might marry straight away instead of living together?
- Many churches see cohabitation as sinful - sex is only for marriage.
- St. Paul said ‘It is better to marry than to burn with passion.’
- They want to start a family.
- They love and trust one another.
Do all Christians believe in ‘no sex before marriage’?
Not all. Many Christians will do what their conscience tells them is right in God’s eyes.
Also, the Church of England says that cohabiting couples’ legal rights should be protected.

What is the difference between a ‘widow/widower’ and a ‘divorcee’
widow/widower = a person whose husband/wife has died.
divorcee = a person who was previously married but has since divorced.
Which Christian group do not believe in getting a divorce?
Roman Catholics. They only allow annulment - an acknowledgement that the marriage was not properly valid in the first place.
Are Anglican ministers allowed to re-marry people in church if they’ve already been divorced once?
Anglican ministers may allow it. Not all are happy to because the Bible is against it.
‘Anyone who divorces his wife and marries another woman commits adultery against her. And if she divorces her husband and marries another man, she commits adultery.’ (Mark 10:11-12)

Why do Christians believe that families are so important?
- They are the building blocks of a healthy society.
- A place to care for the young, vulnerable & old.
- Where children learn to share feelings.
- Where young can learn about life and faith.
