what is liberation theology
an attempt to liberate people at all levels of their life (spiritually, socially, from oppressive gov, politically, economically, etc)

wrote Theology of Liberation, from Peru, born 1938. now a teacher in US, says that theology is the 2nd step, its a reflection upon actions of service
what is task of conscientization? give example
raising awareness; Ex: bus strike with Rosa Park, MLK
what is systemic and institutional evil and injustice? give ex.
an evil that reaches the level of an institution. once the evil system is institutionalized, it becomes difficult to get rid of. ex: sexual assualt with priests, draft for vietnam war

who does God have preferential option for?
the poor (God cares for the widows, orphans, and strangers in your midst”. thus we out to have a bias for the poor
what is the prophetic proposition of the poor
the poor can tell the truth in a way that the wealthy cant bc the poor have nothing to lose. can tell us what we need to hear. we can learn from the poor.
base comunity
small group of christians who read the bible can are concerned with how they can apply the bible to real life situations and conditions they face
hermeneutical suspicion
if i read the bible and it confirms all of my beliefs, I should be suspicious that i may not be listening to its radical message, for its not calling into question my beliefs or challenging me
women’s liberation
a liberation movement directing its efforts towards achieving equality for women in modern socitty, esp through the removal of obstacles, including beleifs, values and attitudes that hinder that process

comparative religions
phrase used in 1st half of 20th centuray to describe a common college course. back then old religion courses were only from Christianity perspective and Christianity always came out as superior relgion.
claims of personal experience
arguement for Christianity of experience. problem with this is that you can’t argue with these experiences, but ppl in other religion have similar experiences in their religion
exclusivism/particularism
belief that the only possible way to encounter God and receive salvation is to have EXPLICIT faith in Jesus. a more typical position of Evangelicals and fundamentals
counterargument to exclusivism
only 31% of world is Christians, thus saying that 70% of world can’t be saved
pluralism
more liberal perspective among Christians that denies the finalist of Christa as God’s only way to salvation and views other religions as equal paths to God
