A

Each persons is God, and there is only one God

16
Q

Interpretations of the Genesis creation story

A

Literal (conservative)- believe that God’s Word is infallible so it should be taken as the absolute truth, reject any science

Liberal - take the story as a myth, which is supported by the differences in the style and order of accounts given in Genesis 1 and 2, and scientific evidence

Other - God’s time is not the same as our time, making it possible that the story is both literal and scientifically accurate

Moral evil

A

Suffering caused by the actions of humans

18
Q

Natural evil

A

Suffering created through no direct fault of humans (e.g natural disasters)

19
Q

Humans and sin

A

Moral evil - some see suffering as a natural result of the sinful nature of humans; doesn’t explain why natural evils exist
Test - evil is something humans are responsible for and should be able to deal with
Other - God has a purpose that humans may not fully understand, so suffering has a purpose that isn’t fully understood

20
Q

Problem of evil (inconsistent triad)

A

If God is Omnipotent but evil still exists, then he’s not benevolent
If God is benevolent but evil still exists, then he’s not omnipotent
If evil exists, God is either not omnipotent or benevolent

Referred to as a saviour

22
Q

Jesus’ Role

A

Sent to Earth to take the punishment for all human sin and restore the broken relationship between God and humanity
His death was sufficient because he was perfect and not affected by original sin
Believe that Jesus has made it possible to enter heaven after physical death

23
Q

Why is Jesus an example to be followed

A

He spent time with those whom society rejected
Showed his love for God through his actions, not just his word
He was moved by compassion

View on Incarnation, Crucifixion, Resurrection, Ascension

A

Some conservative Christians take it literally

The empty cross in Protestant churches emphasises the idea that the cross was not the end

Q

Hell

A

Being completely destroyed in both body and the soul, and ceasing to exist at the point of physical death

38

A

Roman Catholic belief in a place where people not pure enough to go to heaven are purified before going to heaven

40
Q

Beliefs about Life after Death

A

Christians have faith that the events in the world are part of God’s plan which will have a good outcome

Most look forward to a life after death, but put this at the back of their minds and focus on making life better for others on Earth

They may do this because of Jesus’ teaching in the Parable of the Sheep and the Goats (Matthew 25) that says unless you help others, your salvation may be at risk

41
Q

Augustinian Theory

A

Evil came about through human free will, which God can’t interfere with because he wants us to have free will
He gives us the opportunity of salvation through Jesus Christ

42
Q

Irenaean Theory

God allows evil and suffering to exist because through it we learn and develop spiritually
