Christianity Beliefs and Teachings Flashcards
this is a really long topic but you got this
Which book did God create the world in, and in how many days did he do it?
Bonus point: do all Christians believe this?
Genesis
7 days
Not all Christians literally believe every word of the story. Some take it as a metaphor and believe that 7 days is actually representative of 7 ‘ages’ (periods of time). It is pretty universally agreed on that God is the creator.
What did God create on each day?
- Light and darkness
- Sky and sea
- Land
- Sun and moon
- Birds and fish
- Humans
- He rested
List three quotes about the creation
- In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth.
- And God said ‘let there be light’ and there was light.
- So God created mankind in his own image.
How many of the Trinity were present at creation?
All of them!
Father: The creator
Son: In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God.
Holy Spirit: The Spirit of God was hovering over the water.
Is Christianity monotheistic or polytheistic?
Bonus point: what is the creed which tells us this?
Monotheistic - there is only one God.
Nicene creed: “We believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth”
What qualities does God have?
Omnipotent (all powerful) “Nothing is impossible with God”
Omnibenevolent (all loving)
“God so loved the world that he gave his one and only son”
Omniscient (all knowing)
“O Lord you have searched me and known me”
Immanent, Just, Transcendent, Forgiving, Eternal, Personal, Judge
What is the Trinity and how are the different parts linked?
Bonus point: what is the fancy word for how it works
The Father, Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit - they are all separate parts of God, but they are all the same God.
The hypostatic union: Jesus is fully God and fully human at the same time
What is the Problem of Evil and how is it justified?
Bonus point: what triangle is related to this?
If God is all-powerful and all-loving, why does evil and suffering still exist?
Justification: punishment for Original Sin, God gave us free will, a test of our faith to God
Inconsistent triad: God is omnipotent, God is omnibenevolent, but evil still exists?!?!?
What is a denomination?
Bonus point: name 5 Christian denominations
A denomination is a sub-group within a religion which has slightly different beliefs to others following the same religion.
Protestant, Catholic, Quaker, Orthodox, Latter Day Saints, Methodist, Baptist (and more)
What was the incarnation?
Bonus point: give a quote about the incarnation
The incarnation was when Jesus took on human form and lived with us on Earth. He was God incarnate.
Incarnation = to take on flesh
“The word became flesh and made his dwelling among us”
Who were Jesus parents, and how was he born?
Bonus points: what is the fancy word for Mary’s pregnancy
Mary and God the Father (Joseph was kind of like a step-dad)
The immaculate conception (immaculate = clean, the conception was ‘clean’ because no sex was involved)
