Imply two things: Christianity = losing auth. In soc. and secular organisations are taking tradition church roles ( Christ. = failing to persuade people) OR christian moral values and acts. = part of everyone’s thinking - no need for specific religious refs.

Aquinas: human reason grasp certain truths but only as a 1st step - doctrine of scripture = whole truth - saw how religion and rational thought work together to create moral reasoning

Conscience: Protestant reformation - auth of scripture = challenged and idea of interpretation through Ind. con = accepted - challenged universal truth and not confirming to national religion

19th century: ppl saw faith as personal commitment
Leudwig feuerbach: German philosopher alongside Marx and Freud = detractors of religion = dangerous illusion and projection of aspects of humankind
Matter of cultivating sense of self within world in wat thats human and finding peace with god
