What is worship?
An act of praise, honour or devotion to God
What is private worship?
When someone praises or honours God in their own home
Why do Christians worship?
To thank God, seek forgiveness, ask for help, or to deepen their relationship with God and strengthen their faith
Lithurgical worship
Worship that follows a set ritual or structure
Non-lithurgical worship
Worship that doesn’t follow a set text or ritual
Informal worship
A type of non-lithurgical worship that is spontaneous or charismatic.
Churches that are lithurgical
Catholic, Orthodox and Anglican churches
Non-lithurgical churches
Non-conformist churches e.g. Methodist, Baptist, and United reformed churches
Informal churches
Community/house churches e.g. Pentecostal church
Prayer
Communication with God
What are the benefits of prayer
Encourages reflection, gives strength in times of trouble, creates sense of peace, enables communication with God, helps Christians accept God’s will.
What does the Lord’s prayer tell Christians?
God is the father of the whole community and it creates a sense of unity when they all say the prayer at once
What is Baptism?
When a person in cleansed from sin by submerging or washing themselves with holy water and re-emerging as a Christian free from sin
What candle is sometimes lit during Christian rituals e.g. baptism?
A paschal candle
What is Eucharist?
Also known as mass, last supper, Lord’s supper, divine lithurgy, breaking of bread etc. It is where Christians eat bread and drink wine at church to reenact the last supper Jesus had.
When did the last supper occur?
On Holy Thursday
What happened in Lourdes?
A woman called Bernadette saw an apparition of the Virgin Mary on February 11, 1858
Why is Iona a place of pilgrimage in Christianity?
It was where many saints lived and was where many missionaries were sent from to convert people to Christianity
What is pilgrimage?
A journey to a place of significance, often for the purpose of achieving healing, personal development, or strengthing personal faith
How is Christmas celebrated?
Carols are sung, churches are decorated with flowers and Christmas trees, cards are exchanged and gifts are given
What happened on Palm Sunday
Palm leaves were placed in front of Jesus for him to ride over on his donkey
What happened at the last supper?
Jesus gave his disciples bread to represent his body and wine to represent his blood.
What happened on good Friday?
Judas betrayed Jesus and Jesus was killed on the cross
What happened on Easter Sunday?
Jesus was resurrected and an angel told Mary Magdalene, a woman who was visiting Jesus’ tomb, to tell the disciples that Jesus had been resurrected.
What does a Christ shingle represent?
The orange is the world, the four sticks with fruit on them are the seasons and the candle represents Jesus as the ‘light of the world’
