Christianity Flashcards
Three wise men
King Herod feels threatened by Jesus, and wants to dispose of him. So when the three wise me come to visit Jesus, King Herod tell them to bring him back to him, so he can “worship” Jesus. But God tells the three wise men that they shouldn’t bring him back. When the wise men don’t return, Herod is furious. An angel tells Joseph in his dream that they should flee to Egypt, so they do. Meanwhile, King Herod has every male under the age of two killed, but Jesus was in Egypt, so he wasn’t killed. After Herod dies, angel comes in Joseph’s dream and tells them to move to Israel, so they move to Nazareth. Jesus grows up there.
John the Baptist
An angel tells John’s father who is a priest that John will be full of holiness and he will turn others to God. In his 20’s, John wore camel skin and ate honey, and wandered through Jordan, preaching about the Messiah, and telling everybody to repent their sins, and just live life. Before preaching, John would baptize people in the river Jordan. Jesus arrives to get baptized, and John knows that he is the Messiah. The Holy Spirit comes to John and says, that Jesus was his beloved son, and he was pleased by him. King Herod heard John’s influence, and shut him in jail. Later John was beheaded.
Temptation in the Wilderness
After baptized, Jesus goes to desert for 40 days and nights, and fasts. Jesus is lead up by the Holy Spirit into the wilderness to be tempted by the Devil. Hungry, the Devil said since he was the son of God, he should make some stones into bread. Jesus denies, because he needs food, but he also needs God’s words. Then, the Devil tells Jesus to jump off of a temple, because if he was holy, Angels would take care of him. Jesus denied. The Devil then took him to a mountain, which looked over many kingdoms. The Devil said that all the land would be Jesus’ if he got down onto his knees, and worshiped him. Jesus denied once more, because he said he would only worship the one true God. The Devil left, and angels came to help him.
Apostles/Disciples
Jesus chose 12 apostles that would go around telling people about Christianity.
Jesus’ birth
Angel Gabriel assures Marry a baby without receiving a sperm. It is called the “immaculate conception”. Marry and Joseph, fiancé, travel to Bethlehem to have Jesus, because that is where Joseph was born. But there is no room in the inn. Jesus is born in a manger.
The last supper
Jesus came to Jerusalem. People welcomed him, saying that he was the Messiah. Threatened, the Pharisees began to plot against him. On Passover, Jesus went to the temple to pray, but found merchants and money changers. Frustrated, Jesus flipped over their tables and drove them out. The people who controlled the temple worship also became frustrated with him, and also started plotting against him. That night, Jesus was having dinner with his disciples, and broke bread and gave it to them and said that the bread was his body, and they should eat it in rememberance of him. He gave them wine and said this is my blood, eat it in rememberance of him. These instructions are now followed in the Christian church. It is called the holy communion. Once the meal was over, Jesus told his disciples that he would soon be gone, and gave them his final commandment: love one another.
Crucifixion
After the meal, Jesus was arrested, and taken to Pontious Pilate, and charged for organizing a revolt against Rome. His death sentence was crucifixion. That means you tie or nail someone to a cross and leave them to die. Jesus was whipped, and a crown of thorns was put on his head to mock him being King. He then travelled to Golgotha, a place in the outskirts of Jerusalem with a cross on his back. Weepers followed him up to the mountain. His hands and feet were nailed to the cross, and he was mocked and taunted by soldiers and a mob. Hours later he asked why had fore sakes him, and then he died. After death, he was wrapped in linen shroud and placed in a tomb. The tomb was offered by a rich man, because Jesus’ family wouldn’t have been able to afford it.
Ressurection
Three days after the crucifixion, Jesus was resurrected. Two friends went to visit his tomb, and an angel came and said that he had risen from the dead. They find Jesus and he instructs them to find his disciples. The disciples didn’t recognize him, but then they ate bread together and they noticed his presence. Jesus revealed himself at the place where the disciples were fishing. The disciples caught nothing, so Jesus filled their nets with fish. Jesus taught them of the kingdom of God. Easter commemorates his Ressurection.
Rites of Passage
They are sacraments. The most common sacraments are baptism, death, and marriage
Baptism
It started with John the Baptist. It normally occurs a few days after birth, but adults can be baptized too. It is induction to Christian society and faith. You use water, and that symbolizes spiritual purification and cleansing. Godparents are required to attend. They have to agree to be responsible for religious upbringings if parents aren’t able to. The infant is often given a name during baptism. That is called christening.
Via Dolorosa
Via Dolorosa is the actual route in Jerusalem leading to Golgotha. There are stations marked in the road.
Sermon on the Mount
Jesus gave a sermon on a mountain, and he gave teachings.
Marriage
It is where the man and woman devote themselves to each other for life. There is a sacrament of the holy matrimony where the couple agree to mirror the Union of Christ and the church. It is a symbol of self sacrifice and devotion. It is usually in a church. The bride is escorted down the isle by parents, and is entrusted to the groom. At the altar, the bride and groom exchange vows and rings. After they kiss, the couple is followed down the isle by the wedding party. Also common things are ring beaers and flower girls. Those present receive communion because in Roman Catholic weddings, it happens during mass. Most weddings are followed by a party.
Death
Christ’s Ressurection is proof that death is a passage to life eternal. At moment of death, the person is judged by how they lived their life. You either go to heaven, hell, or purgatory. They get a sacrament called Last Rite. It is anointing of the sick given to gravely ill people. Sick people ask for forgiveness for their sins. The funeral customs are that there is a period of time of mourning There is a funeral ceremony, including prayers and speeches. Sometimes the body is shown before the ceremony. A rosary is put over the body the evening before the funeral. After funeral, family gathers at family home to mourn.
Holy trinity
Catholics only have one God. There are three aspects to God: the father, the son, and the Holy Spirit. Each part has a special purpose. Faith in the holy trinity is the pathway to salvation.
God the father: God is not created or born. He is everlasting and eternal. Everything comes from God.
Holy Spirit: also called the Holy Ghost, is the divine love that precedes and unites the Father and the son
Christ the son: Jesus Christ came forth from God the Father. Through his life, death and Ressurection, he became united with God.
