Creed
A state of Christian belief.
The word
A word used at the beginning of John’s gospel to refer to God the Son.
A parable
A simple story used to illustrate moral or spiritual lesson, as told by Jesus in the gospels.
Incarnation
Becoming flesh, taking human form.
Purgatory
A place where sinners souls go while waiting to be judged before getting to heaven.
Sin
Any action which goes against God and separates humans from him.
Salvation
Saving the soul and delivering it from sin so that it can have an eternal life in heaven.
Original sin
The sin which we are born with that tempts us to disobey God.
Atonement
Restoring the relationship between God and humanity through life, death and resurrection of Jesus.
Mass/Eucharist
A ceremony in which the sacrificial death and resurrection of Jesus is celebrated using bread and wine.
Mission
The vocation or calling of a Religious organisation or individual to go out into the world and spread their faith.
Persecution
Hostility and ill treatment especially because of race, political or religious beliefs.
Ascension
Going or being taken up; the event forty days after the resurrection when Jesus returned to glory in heaven.
Baptism
The sacrament through which people become members of the Church. It involves the use of water as a symbol of the washing away of sin.
Bible
Source of wisdom and authority; a holy book containing both the Old and New Testaments.
Christ
‘Anointed One’.
Crucifixion
The death of Jesus; a form of the death penalty used by the Romans.
Evangelism
Preaching the gospel (the good news about God) to convert people to the Christian faith.
Pilgrimage
A religious journey to a holy site/sacred place, it is an act of worship and devotion.
