What is the Catholic view on marriage?
‘A man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and they shall become one flesh’
What is the Catholic view on divorce and remarriage? (2)
- Marriage vows are permanent - divorced couples are still seen as married in the eyes of God.
- ‘To cherish as long as we both shall live’ - Remarriage is not allowed except when an annulment takes place.
What is the Catholic view on homosexuality? (4)
- Familiaris Consortio: “The very institution of marriage and conjugal love are ordained to the procreation and education of children”
- Condemns homosexual acts not people - asks homosexuals to live celibate.
- Condemns homophobia
- Cannot procreate so it is sinful
What is the Catholic view on contraception? (2)
- ‘Be fruitful and multiply’ - Contraception is bad b/c it stops procreation and takes away God’s role of transmitting human life.
- Prefer to use the ‘Rhythm Method’ - planning sex around the women’s menstrual cycle to avoid the fertile period.
What is the Protestant view on divorce and remarriage? (2)
- ‘I tell you that anyone who divorces his wife, except for sexual immorality, brings adultery upon her’
- God’s love isn’t present in a miserable marriage
What is the Protestant view on homosexuality? (3)
- ‘No man is to have sexual relationships with another man, God hates that’
- Marriage is ordained for the union of a man and a woman only.
- Purpose of sex is to procreate, same-sex couples cannot do this so sexual acts would be a sin.
