Messiah
The hope that God would send a King to free the Jews from the Romans and let them have their land again.
Prophecy
Words spoken about the future which are believed to have come from God. They often contain a warning of some sort.
Palestine
The name of the land in which the Jews lived and Jesus was born.
Pharisee
The strict religious men who saw themselves as following the Jewish rules to the letter of the law.
Zealot
Jews who wanted to overthrow the Romans by force. They were prepared for their land and freedom.
Samaritan
People who had once been Jewish but had married people from other lands and races.
The Holy of Holies
The inner most part of the Jewish temple where the high priest met God. It contained the Ark of the Covenant.
The Sermon on the Mount
A famous set of teaching given by Jesus to the crowds who followed him.
Martin Luther King
A famous leader of the American Civil Rights Movement who protested peacefully against the way black people in America were treated.
Segregation
An American law promoting the separation of people based on the colour of their skin.
Parable
A story told by Jesus which had a religious meaning.
Agape
The Greek word for ‘unconditional love’.
Palm Sunday
The day Christians remember Jesus’ entry into Jerusalem riding on a donkey and the crowds laying palm branches to welcome the Messiah.
Good Friday
The day Christians remember that Jesus was put to death by the Romans not because he was bad but because he wanted to sacrifice his life for all of humanity.
EASTER Sunday
The day Christians remember that the tomb was found empty and Jesus’ followers claimed that he had risen from the dead providing new life for all humanity.
