Christian Celebrations Flashcards
What is Advent?
It’s the period of preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ at Christmas and also of preparation for the Second Coming of Christ.
What is Christmas?
Christmas is an annual festival commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ.
How do Christians celebrate Christmas?
Church services often include a carol service. Some Christians start Christmas Day with a midnight service, called Midnight Mass. Christians often celebrate Christmas by giving and receiving presents and cards.
Why is Christmas important to Christians?
Christmas is important to many Christians because it reminds them that: Jesus, the Son of God, came to Earth for all people, symbolised through the visits of the wise men and the shepherds. Mary and Joseph both had a strong faith in God, despite the difficulties they faced.
What is Lent?
Lent is a solemn religious observance commemorating the 40 days Jesus spent fasting in the desert and enduring temptation by Satan before beginning his public ministry. Christians usually give up something during this time.
What is Holy Week?
Holy Week is the most sacred week in the liturgical year in Christianity. It is the week before Easter, starting on Palm Sunday.
What is Easter?
Easter is a Christian festival and cultural holiday commemorating the resurrection of Jesus from the dead, described in the New Testament as having occurred on the third day of his burial following his crucifixion by the Romans at Calvary c. 30 AD.
What is Palm Sunday?
Palm Sunday is a Christian moveable feast that falls on the Sunday before Easter. The feast commemorates Christ’s triumphal entry into Jerusalem. Palm Sunday marks the first day of Holy Week.
What is Maundy Thursday?
Maundy Thursday is the day during Holy Week that commemorates the Washing of the Feet and Last Supper of Jesus Christ with the Apostles. It is the fifth day of Holy Week, after Holy Wednesday and followed by Good Friday.
What is Good Friday?
Good Friday is a Christian holiday commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus and his death at Calvary.
What is Holy Saturday?
Holy Saturday is the final day of Holy Week, between Good Friday and Easter Sunday, when Christians prepare for the latter. The day commemorates the Harrowing of Hell while Jesus Christ’s body lay in the tomb. Christians of the Catholic, Methodist, Anglican and Reformed denominations begin the celebration of the Easter Vigil service on Holy Saturday, which provides a transition to the season of Easter.
