How is God omnipotent?
1) Can do anything that is takes sense for him to do
2) Can’t do everything - can’t make a square circle or something immoral.
3) Meant that his power is immense/immeasurable.
Examples from the Bible of God’s omnipotence?
1) Creation of the universe.
2) Wonders of the universe; owes existence to his creative/sustaining power.
3) Miracles performed by Jesus.
4) Stories (The Creation, The Flood, the Ten Plagues, Lake Galilee).
How is God omnibenevolent?
1) Agape; Unconditional love - self-giving, self-sacrificial love.
2) Jesus’ death; loves humanity so much that he gave his own Son so the original sin can be overcome.
3) Many find it hard to believe such a God can exist in a world full of suffering.
Examples from the Bible of God’s omnibenevolence.
1) “For God so loved the world that He gave his only Son.” - John 3:16.
2) Jesus told the Parable of the Prodigal Son, illustrating his love.
3) Teaching; The Sermon on the Mountain.
How is God just?
1) Operates in a way the gives all equal rates; not discriminatory.
2) Many believe suffering is a test of faith, not finish loving/just God.
3) Problem of Evil made worse because suffering seems excessive and pointless.
Examples from the Bible of how God is Just?
1) Bible portrays him as such.
2) God does whatever it takes to relieve humanity’s suffering.
3) Ten Commandments.
4) “In everything, do to others as you would have them to do to you.” - Matthew 7:12.
The Holy Trinity…
1) Are all God but aren’t each other (e.g. The Father isn’t The Son etc.)
2) Can’t understand; God is transcendent, can’t be fully understood.
3) Believe in 1 God.
4) Trinity = God’s nature revealed in three ways.
God the Father is…
1) Creator/sustainer of the universe
2) Revealed to humanity through scripture/ Jesus’ teachings
3) TRANSCENDENT
4) PERSONAL
God the Son is…
1) Saviour of mankind.
2) God incarnate; made of flesh
3) Revealed to mankind through Jesus.
4) IMMANENT (permanently pervading and sustaining the universe).
5) PERSONAL
God the Holy Spirit is…
1) Source of strength Christians find in their hearts.
2) Revealed through religious experience.
3) IMMANENT
4) IMPERSONAL
What are ‘non-trinitarians’? Give examples.
1) Christians that don’t believe in the Holy Trinity.
2) Unitarians, Jehovahs Witness, Mormons.
Why do non-trinitarians reject the idea of the Trinity?
1) Believe God is supreme, can’t be divided.
2) Believe Jesus is a separate and lesser being.
Christian beliefs about the problem of evil?
1) Some believe the devil tempts them.
2) Others believe God gave us free will so our choices aren’t God’s fault.
Atheist belief about the Problem of Evil?
If suffering exists, either God doesn’t;t or he isn’t the God the Christians thought he was.
Teachings about the Problem of Evil?
1) Genesis; Adam and Eve.
2) Noah’s Ark.
3) Story of Job - suffering is part of God’s plan.
4) St Iranaeus - suffering is the education of the soul.
5) St Augustine - suffering is the consequence of free will.
6) Suffering brings balance to the world.
