what is salvation
the belief that through god’s grace, jesus’s death and resurrection bough about salvation. it is the saving of the soul and being able to enter life in heaven
two quotes for salvation
“the lamb of the god who takes away the sins of the world”
“christ died for our sins”
three natures of god
omnipotent - all powerful
omnibenevolent - all loving
just
quote for god as all loving
“lord is compassionate and gracious”
quote for god as just
“he is a god of justice”
quote for god as all powerful
“the almighty is beyond our reach and exhalted in power”
how does the nature of god influence christians
- worship god more as they are grateful and think god is worthy of worship
- have hope for forgiveness of their sins
- follow god’s commandments and teachings to prepare for judgement day
3 problems of evil and suffering
- raises questions of nature of god: how can he be omnibenevolent and omnipotent but still allow suffering
- the amount of evil and suffering makes it improbable that an all powerful and all loving god exists, for example natural disasters
- the logical problem of evil or the inconsistent triad, god cannot be all loving all powerful and evil still existing
four responses to the problem of evil
- “suffering is a result of original sin” - the catholic church and st augustine theodicy
- the free will defence: moral evil is caused by humans as god has given us free will, st augustine said “a runaway horse is better than a stone”
- john hick said that evil and suffering are a part of god’s plan, we would not be able to perform the good deeds without evil and suffering, it is needed for spiritual growth “suffering produces pereverance”
quote for the holy trinity
“baptise them in the name of the father, the son and the holy spirit”
four beliefs about the trinity
- it is the 3 parts of god
- father is the powerful creator of the world
- son is jesus who came to earth in human form and died
- holy spirit is invisible part of god acting within the world
why is belief in the holy trinity important?
- central belief in christianity as it underpins every other belief
- means they inderstand the complex nature of god
- shows jesus is son of god/incarnation
- teaches christians that god is present in the world today through holy spirit
- teaches that there is only one god
quote for the creation
“in the beginning god created the heavens and earth”
two understandings about creation christians
- literalists take everything word to word from bible so was acc created in six days by god
- liberalists understand creation in a metaphorical way, believing science and religion together can explain creation
how does the story of creation impact christians
- tells us god is omnipotent
- tells us humans are important as they are made in his image
