A thrust fault (movement of plates is less than 45 degrees) of plate movement
Primary effects
(Around) 200 deaths, roads+bridges severely damaged, buildings were damaged
Secondary effects
1000 people left homeless, liquefaction, review of building codes to make them stronger, fires caused due to gas pipes catching fire
Immediate response
Aus government donated (around) NZ$7 million to Red Cross appeal to rebuild the area. Bottled water provided as water supplies were cut off. (Around) 30,000 chemical toilets were flown into the area as sanitation as sewage work was damaged m. Electricity companies restored power areas which were off. Search+rescue teams from NZ, Auz, UK, USA, Japan, Taiwan, China, Singapore
Long term responses
Building codes reviewed to make them stronger, $40 billion spent to re build buildings

They had the development, infrastructure and money to cope with the earthquake, more prepared
