A
10km south east of Christchurch - Occured along a fault which is the result of pressure between the Indo-Australian and Pacific plate.

Primary Effects
A
- Total of 185 people died in the quake
- Iconic buildings such as the cathedral with damaged and destroyed
- 6600 people suffered minor injuries
- 80% of the city without electricity
- hundreds of kilometres of water and sewage pipes damaged

Secondary Effects
A
- 10,600 people moved away from Christchurch after the event causing population decline
- 1240 buildings in the city centre had to be demolished due to being unsafe
- The city couldn’t host any in the rugby World Cup loss of tourism and income
- small businesses put out of action

Short term responses
A
- Aid money sent from around the world ( Australia sent 5 million )
- Chemical toilets provided for 30,000 residents
- ‘Farmy Army’ of 800 farmers brought their equipment to help clean up the city
Rescue crews from Japan, USA, UK and Australia was sent to help
Government declared a state of emergency which stayed in force until the 30th of April

- City centre is categorised into four colour-coded zones which showed extent damage and allowed for coordinated response
- All water and sewage restored by August
- Government insured all damage homes were kept watertight
- By August 80% of Rhodes and 50% of footpath damaged by liquefication had been repaired
