Chr. 35 Plant structure and Growth Flashcards
Taproot
One main primary root, usually develops from the primary root
Nodes
The points at wich leaves are attached
Internodes
Stem section between the nodes
Apical bud
The growing shoot tip
Difference veins mono/eudicots
Most monocots have parallel major veins of equal diameter that run the length of the blade. Eudicots generally have a branched network of veins arising from a major vein (the midrib) that runs down the center of the blade.
Dermal tissue/epirdermis
Serves as the outer protective covering of the plant (like skin).
Vascular tissue/Stelle
Tissue that facilitates the transport of materials trough the plant.
Xylem
Conduct water and dissolved minnerals upwards from roots.
Phoem
Transports sugars and other products downwards.
Ground tissue
Tissue that is neither Vascular or Dermal
Indeterminate growth
Growth that occurs throughout life.
Apical meristems
located at root and shoot tips, provide cells that enable primary growth.
lateral meristems
provide cells that enable secondary growth.
Endodermis
A cylinder one cell thick that forms the boundary with the vascular cylinder.
mesophyll
The leaf’s ground tissue.
