Chpt 2 Folding And Fold Mountains Flashcards
How are fold mountains formed?
When two plates collide, pressure from plates slowly folds the earths crust into fold mts. The upfolds are called anticlines and the downfolds are called synclines
Give three examples of fold mts and how they were formed
- the alps in Europe -> African plate colliding with eurasian plate
- the Himalayas in asia -> Indian plate colliding with eurasian plate
- the andes mountains in south America -> nazca plate colliding with south American plate
Describe the case study on the formation of the andes mountains
The Nazca plate moves towards the South American plate. Where they collide the Nazca plate sinks under the South American plate. The crust is folded to form the Andes mountains on the South American plate. Earthquakes and volcanoes are also formed along this boundary.
Describe the case study of the Armorican folding - mountains of Munster
In munster over 250 million years ago the mts were formed during the Armorican foldings e.g. Comeragh mts co. Waterford. Pressure came from the south which formed these fold mts.
