Chpt. 15 Flashcards
Parenteral preparations
Injected directly into body tissue through the skin and veins
Asepsis
Being completely sterile; free of microorganisms ; most effective way to eliminate disease transmission
Medical asepsis
Removal of pathogens by cleaning any body part or surface that has been exposed to them; also known as the clean technique
Hand hygiene
Frequent, effective hand hygiene by health care workers is the best way to prevent disease transmission; last 2-4 minutes
Disinfection
The ability to kill microorganisms on the surface of various items
Surgical asepsis
Goal: to prevent any microorganisms from entering the patients body through and open wound especially during surgery
Sterilization
The process of killing or destroying all microorganisms and their pathogenic products; achieved with an autoclave that generated steam under pressure
D5NS
5% dextrose in normal saline with 0.9% NaCl
D5W
5% dextrose in water
LR
Lactated Ringers solution with 5% dextrose
NS
Normal saline solution with 0.9% NaCl
SW
Sterile water for injection
Laminar airflow hoods
Circulating filtered air in parallel flow planes; they reduce the risks of bacterial contamination or exposure to chemical pollutants
Vertical laminar airflow hood
Used for all chemotherapeutic agents
Horizontal airflow hood
Chemotherapeutic agents not mixed in this type of hood
Aseptic technique
Strictly applied when preparing parenteral products in a way that prevents microbial contamination
Glove box hoods
Also called glove boxes; they separate workers from areas in which procedures are actually performed
TPN
Total parenteral nutrition; lipids, electrolytes, salts, proteins, etc
United States Pharmacopeia
Standards for compounding, preparing, and labeling of sterile drug preparations
Beyond-use date
Calculated from the time of sterile compounding until it is administered
Ophthalmic
Intended for direct administration into the the conjunctiva of the eye
Compounding records
Also known as “mixing reports”; used to document compounding activities and should be stored in patient charts
