chpt 1 cell structure and organisation Flashcards
1
Q
What is the role of the nucleus ?
A
- contains hereditary material (DNA) in chromatin threads
- controls and directs cell activities eg growing, repairing and reproduction of cells
2
Q
Function of vacuole ?
A
- Provides support for plants when it is filled with water so it can maintain turgidity of cells (prevent bursting)
- temporarily stores waste products and food reserves
3
Q
Function of ribosomes ?
A
- ribosomes on rough ER are responsible for the synthesis of secretory protein
- free ribosomes synthesise intracellular proteins
4
Q
Function of rough ER ?
A
- covered with ribosomes
- transports protein which are manufactured by ribosomes out of cell
5
Q
Function of smooth ER ?
A
- no ribosomes
- synthesis of fats and steroids (sex hormones in mammals are considered steroids)
- detoxification of harmful substances into harmless materials (in liver -> detoxifies alcoholand skin)
- gives rise to golgi body
6
Q
Function of golgi body ?
A
- chemically modifies substances made by ERs (protein fats and steroids)
- stores and packages substances in vesicles for secretion out of cells
7
Q
Features of muscle cell ?
A
- elongated in shape
- contains many mitochondrion for release of ATP during contraction
- contains contractile protein fibres that contract and relax to bring movement
