Chpt 1 Flashcards
What is a mixture?
A substance composed of two or more particles in proportions that can vary from one sample to another.
What is a pure substance?
It’s made up if only one type of particle (one component) and it’s composition is invariant (does not vary one to another)
What is an element?
A substance that cannot be chemically broken down into simpler substances. This is also a pure substance!
What is a compound?
A substance composed of two or more elements in fixed definite proportions. This is a pure substance!
What is a mixture?
A substance composed of two or more particles in proportions that can vary from one sample to another.
Heterogenous mixture
A substance whose composition varies from one region to another.
What is a homogenous mixture?
A substance who’s composition is the same throughout, but the particles making it up vary from sample to sample.
What is the relationship used to find protons the mass number or number of neutrons?
A= (# of protons )+( # of neutrons)
What is the formula to find atomic mass?
Atomic mass= ( fraction of isotope (n)) * ( mass of isotope (n))
