Chp2 Flashcards
Species
A group of organisms sharing common characteristics that interbreed and produce fertile offspring
Habitat
The environment in which a species normally lives
Niche
The particular set of abiotic and biotic conditions and resources and resources to which an organism or population responds
Fundamental niche
Full range of conditions and resources in which a species could survive and reproduce
Realized niche
The actual conditions and resources in which a species could survive and reproduce
Abiotic factors
The non-living physical factors that influence the organisms and ecosystem eg. Temperature sunlight
Biotic factors
The interaction between organisms eg. Predation herbivory
Population
A group of organisms of the same species living in the same area at the same time and which are capable of interbreeding
S and J population curves
A generalized response of populations to a particular set of conditions (abiotic and biotic factors)
Predation
When one animal hunts and eats another organism
Herbivory
An interaction where an animal feeds on a plant
Carrying capacity
The number of organisms or the size of population that an area or ecosystem can support sustainably over a long period of time
Parasitism
One species benefits at the expense of the other - harmful
Mutualism
Two organisms live together - both benefit
Pathogen
An organism that causes disease eg. Bacteria
