chp 8 rate of reaction Flashcards
how is the rate of reaction measured?
the rate of reaction can be measured by working out how much of one of the products has been made in a given time, or how much of a reactant has been used up in a given time
anomalous result
A measurement or reading that does not fit in with the pattern of the other results. Such a result is not necessarily wrong, but shouldbechecked.
colisions
what happens when to or more objects bump into one another
gradient
the steepness of a slope including on a graph, tells you how quickly the reaction is taking place
rise over run
rate of reaction
how quickly or slowly a reaction happens
Collision theory
Collision theory states that for a chemical reaction to occur, the reacting particles must collide with one another. The rate of the reaction depends on the frequency of collisions.
surface area
-measurement of the space on the surface of an object measured in cm squared
- smaller pieces of solids always react faster than larger pieces
precipitate
an insoluble solid formed when two soluble substances react
preliminary work
Some practice works you do before an investigation to find out how you will carry it out. For example, you might find out the range or interval of the independent variable that you will use.
what happens when the temp of a reaction is increased
the particles move faster and collide more often with more energy, this increases the rate of reaction
the higher the temp the faster the rate of reaction
concentration
a measure of how many particles of a substance are in a fixed volume of a solution
dilute
adding water to a solution dilutes it: there are fewer particles of the solute in a fixed volume of the solution
activation energy
The activation energy is the minimum energy with which particles must collide in order to cause a chemical reaction.
