CHP 8 kinetic model of matter Flashcards
Why do solids have fixed shape?
Very strong FOA between the particle - cannot move far apart from each other - only can vibrate about fixed position - fixed shape
Why do liquids have an indefinite shape?
Slightly weaker FOA between particles compared to solid particles - particles can move freely and slide past each other - take shape of container - irregular shape
Why do gas have an indefinite shape?
Negligible FOA between particles - particles move far apart at high speed - take up any space available - indefinite shape
Why do solids have a fixed volume?
Very strong FOA between the particles - very closely packed - negligible space between particles - cannot push closer - volume won’t change via compression - fixed volume
Why do liquids have a fixed volume?
Strong FOA between particles - closely packed - negligible space between particles - cannot push closer - volume won’t change via compression - fixed volume
Why do gas have an indefinite volume?
Negligible FOA between particles - packed very far apart - a lot of space between the particles - can be pushed closer together - volume can change via compression - indefinite volume
Why are the smoke particles moving in a random and continuous motion?
This is because of the continuous, random and uneven bombardment of the fast moving air molecules, which are too small to be seen under the microscope, resulting in the smoke particles moving in a zigzag manner.
What causes Brownian motion to occur?
The collision of air molecules and smoke particles colliding with each other randomly.
Which states can Brownian motion occur in?
Liquid and gaseous (fluids)
