Chp 5 5.3 Covalent Bonding Flashcards
How would a dative bond work when reacting H+ with H2O?
As the oxygen in H2O has 4 lone pairs of electrons they can be shared with H+ to complete H+
What is the definition of a covalent bond?
The electrostatic attraction between the atoms shared electrons and the nuclei of the atoms
How can BF3 exist? (Boron has 3 and F has 7 outer electrons)
Due to the expansion of the octet, not all atoms have to have 8 electrons on their outer shell as long as they have sufficient bonds
Why does carbonate have a charge of -2
It has 2 oxygen atoms with on 7 electrons so they are donated 2 electrons giving the charge
Describe the force of attraction in a covalent bond?
A localised force of attraction in the overlap of the bond
