Human Rights
Rights that protect one from discrimination by other individuals.
Discrimination
Treating individuals/groups unfairly or differently because of such characteristics as race, sex, religion, age or disability
Suffrage
The right to vote in political elections; franchise
Feminist
One who believes in the social, economic and political equality of the sexes
Persons Case
Legal battle fought by five feminists to have women made “persons” legally and able to be appointed to office
Pay Equity
Equal payment for work evaluated as equal in worth
Sexual harassment
Unwelcome actions or conduct of a sexual nature toward another person
Employment Equity
Principle: treatment of all employees should be based on their abilities, and be fair, just and impartial
Barriers to Equality
anything that prevents someone from participating fully and equally in society
Lobby Groups
groups that try to influence the government to pass laws that support what the lobbyist represents
Assimilation
the process of absorbing minority into the prevailing culture
Head Tax
A Head Tax imposed by Parliament to discourage Chinese workers (on CPR) from entering the country
Immigration Act 1910
Introduced a point system to select immigrants that looked at an applicant’s education, skills, personal qualities and occupational demand
Enemy Aliens
people from enemy countries of their new country viewed as enemy aliens
Points System
A method of evaluating applicants for independent immigration, using categories and points
Civil Marriages Act 2005
Act that legalized same-sex marriage in Canada, 2005
Complainant
A person who makes an allegation of discrimination
Unintentional Discrimination
Actions that appear to be neutral and have the effect of discrimination against most members of a group
Intentional Discrimination
Treatment of others that is unfair (on the basis of prejudice or stereotype) and on purpose
Bona Fida Occupational Requirement
a legitimate reasonable necessity (requirement) of a job
