What does respect for autonomy mean
the patient has the capacity to act intentionally, with understanding, and free will (INFORMED CONSENT)
What is the principle of nonmaleficence mean
Requires we avoid needless harm or injury to the patient, whether by action or inaction.
What principle pertains to the actions of health care providers benefitting the patient?
beneficence
Which principle is referring to fairness? (equal treatment regardless of age, gender, educational background, and other factors)

What is the process by which patients are educated about the essentials of a medical procedure.

What is the most important goal of informed consent?
for patients to have an opportunity to be a knowledgeable participant in their health care decisions
What are the five things that are generally included for informed consent?
1 the nature of the procedure
2 reasonable alternatives
3 the risks, benefits, and uncertainties related to each alternative
4 assessment of the patient’s understanding

When is it appropriate to question a patients ability to participate in decision making?
1 If patient is underage (under 18) parental consent needed.
2 If patient is incapacitated or incapable of providing consent (guardian or surrogate decision maker must consent)
3 If patient does not speak english (translator needed for consent) patient must provide consent
Can the patient withdraw previously granted consent at any time?
yes and the sonographer must promptly stop the exam

What should we do when first meeting a patient?
Introduce yourself
Explain exam
Identify patient with wristband or by patients own identification
If the patient is sedated and has no wristband what should you do?
Call the nurse ( exam may be rescheduled when patient has appropriate identification)
What would be considered an unauthorized practice of medicine by the sonographer during or after the exam?
providing clinical interpretation or discussing the findings with the patient
What is defined as the quality of being worthy, honored, or esteemed?
Dignity (patients perception of being in control and having self worth)
