Chp 2 Flashcards
Adaptive behavior
Is behavior that promotes an organism survival in the natural habitat
Natural Selection
Evolutionary process by which those individuals of a species that are best adapted are the ones that survive and reproduce.
Charles darwin
Theory of evolution by natural selection
Evolutionary psychology
Emphasizes the importance of adaptation reproduction and survival of the fittest in shaping behavior
Chromosome
Can be found in the nucleus of each human cell which are threadlike structures made up of the deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA
DNA
Is a complex molecule that has a double helix shape, like a spiral staircase and contains the genetic information
Genes
The units of hereditary information composed of DNA. Genes help cells to reproduce themselves and help manufacture the protein that maintain life
Protein
Are the building blocks of cells as well as the regulators that direct the body processes
Mitosis
Cellular reproduction in which the cells nucleus duplicates itself with two new cells being formed, each containing the same 23 pairs of chromosomes
Meiosis
A specialized form of cell division that occurs to form an egg and sperm aka gametes
Fertilization
An egg and a sperm fuse to create a single cell call the zygote
Genotype
All of a person genetic material make up
Phenotype
Consist of observable characteristics
Passive genotype environment correlation
Occur because biological parents who are genetically related to the child provide a rearing environment for the child
Evocative genotype environment correlations
Occur because a child’s genetically influenced characteristic elicit certain types of environment
