Chp 19 carboxylic acid Flashcards
what does carboxylic acid compose of?
-COOH
which oxygen is more basic/ acidic in COOH and why?
the C=O is more basic bc it has more electrons localized
the COH is acidic bc the O withdraws electrons from the H making it easier to donate
how to name carboxylic acid if linear
replace the e in alkane and add -oic acid
where is the C1 on a linear carboxylic acid
on the carbonyl carbon
how to name carboxylic acid if cyclic
add carboxylic at end
where is the C1 on a cyclic carboxylic acid
@ alpha carbon, one carbon away from carbonyl carbon
in NMR, the H in COOH is ?
the most acidic, therefore the most deshielded, most downfield @11-12ppm
alpha H’s are what in comparison to the H in COOH
less acidic than the COOH, therefore it will be the next most downfield usually @ 2-2.6
