Compliance
Implementation or fulfillment of a prescribers/caregiver’s prescribed course of treatment or therapeutic plan by a patient.
Medication error
Any preventable adverse drug event involving inappropriate medication use by a patient or health care professional, it may or may not cause patient harm.
Noncompliance
An informed decision on the part of the patient not to adhere to or follow a therapeutic plan or suggestion.
Nursing process
An organizational framework for the practice of nursing. Phases are: assessment, Diagnosis, planning, implementation and evaluation.
Assessment
Establish a comprehensive baseline of data concerning a particular patient.
Diagnosis
The identification of the nature of a illness or problem by examination of the symptoms.
Planning
The nurse prioritize the nursing diagnosis.
Implementation
The nurse prepares and administer prescribed medication. Ex: applying a cardiac monitor or oxygen
Drug half-life
Is defined as the amount of time required for 50% of a drug to be removed by the body.
Prescriber
Any healthcare professional licensed by the appropriate regulatory board to prescribe medication.
Outcomes
Descriptions of specific patient behavior or responses that demonstrate meeting of or achievement of behaviors related to each patient’s human needs.
Right drug
The right drug begins with the registered nurse valid license to practice. The specific medication order must be checked against the medication label or profile 3x before giving the medication.
Right dose
A dosage is identified from the prescriber’s order and should always be confirmed that the dosage amount is appropriate for the patients age and size.
Right time
Time a medication is ordered to be given. Ex: twice daily or at 9:00am, 1:00pm and 4:00pm
Right route and form
A complete medication order includes the route of administration ex: oral, rectal
