Choroid Flashcards
What is the choroid
middle layer that sits between the sclera and the retina
what is the choroids main job
to supply the needs of the photoreceptors as the choroid is full of blood vessels and stroma
layers of the choroid
- bruchs membrane
- choriocapillaris
- choroidal stroma
hallers layer
sattlers layer - suprachoroidal lamina (lamina fusca)
suprachoroidal lamina
next to sclera
melanocytes
connective tissue
avascular
choroidal stroma
hallers layer - large arteries and veins branch to form
sattlers layer - intermediate arteries and veins branch to form choriocapillaris
both layers supported by stromal tissue, fibroblasts and immune cells
choriocapillaris
specialised capillary bed
single layer of capillaries
fenestrated vessels
densest closest to macula
supports retinal outer segments
unique to the choroid
bruchs membrane
innermost layer adjacent to retina
modified connective tissue
5 layers
what are the layers of bruchs membrane
basement membrane of choriocapillaris
outer collagenous layer
elastic layer
inner collagenous layer
basement membrane of RPE
what are the three main functions of bruchs membrane
- regulating the diffusion of molecules between the choroids and the RPE
- provides physical support for the RPE cell adhesion, migration and differentiation
- acts as a division barrier so it restricts choroidal and retinal cellular migration and controls that
