CHOLINERGIC AGONISTS AND ANTAGONISTS Flashcards

1
Q

what are the symptoms of organophosphate poisoning?

A

organophosphates phosphorylate cholinesterase leading to its inactivation and buildup of acetylcholine –> which is the major NT at 3 different neurons: muscarinic, nicotinic, and in the CNS.
At low concentrations of NT the effects are dominantly muscarinic (sweating, pupil constriction, secretions in mouth, lungs and eyes, bronchoconstriction, cramps and diarrhea, blurred vision, and urinary incontinence). Nicotinic effects of the NT acetylcholine include muscle fasiciculations and cramps, with paralysis at high concentrations, and tachycardia.
CNS effects include anxiety, ataxia, and convulsions.
ACUTE TREATMENT IS AN ANTICHOLINERGIC AGENT, ATROPINE AND 2 PAM.

Q

what are the anticholinergic side effects?

A

hot as a hare, dry as a bone and mad as a hatter.
caused by antihistamines, oxybutynin (used for urinary incontinence), drugs used to treat parkinsons, and tricyclic antidepressants.
