How to do back slaps?

A

Remove obvious debris
Stand to side and slightly behind pt
Tell pt I’m going to give you 5 back slaps
Give up to 5 back slaps between scapulae with heel of hand
Check mouth after each slap

How to do abdominal thrusts?

A

Stand behind pt, put arms around upper abs
Lean pt forward
Clench fist and place under sternum and wrap other hand around fist
Pull sharply up and inwards

What to do if 1 round of ab thrusts fails to remove obstruction?

A

Call for medical assistance
Recheck mouth for debris
5 back slaps and 5 ab thrusts until assistance arrives or until pt loses consciousness

A

If pt unconscious but breathing - place in recovery position to maintain their breathing
