CHME Test 1 Flashcards
Chemical Process
The combination of steps in which starting materials are converted into desired products using equipment and conditions that facilitate that conversion.
Batch Process
Take A and B and mix in reactor (stop flow) - at time 0, A and B mixed and reaction proceeds for set time.
Continuous Process
Operates without interruption of flow, continuously adding reactants and removing products all the time.
Steady State Process
None of the process characteristics (temperatures, flow rates, concentrations, pressures, etc.) change with time.
Unsteady State/Dynamic/Transient Process
Properties are a function of time.
Block Diagrams
Block used to represent equipment items
Early stages of design
Stream flow rates and compositions shown
Process Flow Diagram
Standard method for engineering designs
shows arrangement and interconnections of equipment with equipment symbols shown
Piping and Instrumentation Diagram
Includes engineering details of equipment, instrumentation, piping, valves, and fittings
Material specification, control lines
Show source/destination of utility lines
Biochemical or Biological Process
Living cells or organisms used to carry out reaction.
3 Major Biochemical Process Components
- Substrate used for the cells to grow (sugar)
- Product being produced
- Biomass (cells produced by process)
Matrix
Rectangular arrangement of numbers.
Conversion Factor
A relationship expressed by an equation where the entries on both sides of the equation are the same quantity but expressed in different units.
Moles
A gram mole of a chemical compound is defined as the number of molecules of that compound whose mass in grams is numerically equal to its molecular weight.
Flow rate
The mass/moles/volume of a material that passes a reference plane within a unit time interval.
Physical variables affecting rate of reaction
- frequency molecules interact
- orientation and force
- energy requirement
