chloroplasts Flashcards
state the 4 layers of the chloroplast from outer to innermost
- outer membrane
- inner membrane space
- inner membrane
- stroma
what are granum
stacked thylakoids
what are thylakoids
folded membranes containing photosynthetic pigments involved in light dependent reactions
what is the stroma
fluid interior containing enzymes involved in the light independent reaction
what are the 2 primary pigments
chlorophyll a and b
what is an example of an accessory pigment
carotenoids
chlorophyll a absorbs which colours?
yellow, green
chlorophyll b absorbs which colours
blue, green
carotenoids absorb which colour
orange
where are pigments located
embedded in thylakoid membrane
what do the pigments do?
form light harvesting systems - each pigment absorbs a different wavelength of light
summarise the process of separating pigments using TLC
- crush leaf and grind with sand & propanone to extract pigments
- transfer to watch glass & dry to evaporate moisture
- add propanone to absorb pigments
- add spot to TLC paper and place tip in running solvent
