What was Simpson’s profession?
An obstetrician, or a midwife (he delivered babies).
Why did religious groups object to chloroform?
They believed pain in childbirth was a gift from God, and that it helped build their character.
Name one opposition to chloroform.
Chloroform smelled, making patients vomit.
Why did patients often die when using chloroform?
With the patient anaesthetized, surgeons tried more difficult operations, often venturing further into the body. This was risky, leading to more deaths (They still didn’t know about infection).
What famous person publicly praised chloroform?
Queen Victoria, in 1853 and 1857, when she used it when in labour.
Why were some people afraid of chloroform?
In 1848, Hannah Greener died in the operating theatre whilst under the influence of chloroform.
