Ch.Lesson 1.3-1.4 Flashcards
Organization
Cells organize in a way that maintains distinct internal compartments
Metabolism
Ingesting energy and molecules in food, converting to fuel for movement and/or sustain body functions and build/maintain body structures (The sum of all anabolic and catabolic reactions that take place in body)
Anabolism
smaller, simpler molecules are combined into larger complex substances
Catabolism
The process by which larger more complex substances are broken down into smaller simpler molecules
Responsiveness
The ability of an organism to adjust to changes in its internal and external enviornments
Differentiation
Unspecialized cells become specialized in structure and function to perform certain tasks in the body
Nutrient
A substance in foods and beverages that is essential to human survival (water, energy-yielding & body-building, micronutrients)
Blood Pressure
The pressure exerted by blood as it flows within vessels
