The Chippendale style was influenced by four distinct styles:
Dutch, from the period just before the beginning of Chippendale’s career; and Gothic, Chinese and French.
What are distinguishing marks of style of the Chippendale Period ?

What are the years of The Chippendale styles in England and in America ?
In England this period extends from 1749 to 1770. In America, where the furniture designs of Thomas Chippendale were copied, the period extends from 1775 to 1790.
In 1754 Chippendale published a book called
“The Gentleman’s and Cabinetmaker’s Director”, usually called the “Director”.
Shortly thereafter a number of brilliant American cabinetmakers were soon reproducing these styles in a more simplified and less ostentatious manner, while at the same time adding their own distinctive marks.
What are the names of the two groups developed ?
“The Philadelphia Group” followed the original Chippendale patterns quite closely and were noted for their highboys of great beauty.
- “The Newport Group” developed the bombe front and puffed rounded designs that looked like the base of a kettle.
