Describe the events of the Civil War.
- KMT and CCP fought 1927 to 1937.
- Second United Front fought the Japanese until 1945.
- CCP gained the upper hand following WWII, took power in 1949.
- 3.5 million killed.
- Starting in 1946, CCP Party work teams went from village to village either condemning villagers as landlords or classifying them as rich, middle or poor peasants. Landlords killed. Because the villagers were not involved in the process, rich peasants returned to power.
- PLA used siege tactics: 150,000 killed in Changchun.
Why did the CCP win the Civil War?
- Promise of land reform was hugely popular among peasants.
- In the Huahai campaign against KMT headquarters alone, 5.4 million were summoned.
- Superior tactics to the 4x larger KMT armies. Guerrilla tactics, very mobile Red Army. “When the enemy attacks, we retreat”, “When the enemy retreats we pursue”.
What monetary problem did China face in 1949?
- Hyperinflation. CCP had bankrolled armies by printing money.
