Q
why was McArthur sacked ? key dates ?
A
- Disagreed with President Truman – MacArthur wanted to expand the war into China, possibly using nuclear weapons, but Truman wanted a limited war to avoid starting World War III.
- Disobeyed direct orders – MacArthur ignored Truman’s instructions by pushing too close to the Chinese border and continuing aggressive military actions.
- Publicly criticised US policy – He made speeches and letters attacking Truman’s strategy, which was seen as undermining civilian control of the military.
- In April 1951, Truman fired MacArthur for insubordination, to show that presidents, not generals, make final decisions in a democracy.
