American reaction to Mao winning the civil war/ significance
-Communism was expanding
-Defensive perimeter strategy is created by Trumans Secretary of State—> containment= globalised
-Truman was blamed for the loss of China

-They now had a communist ally in Asia

-Sino-Soviet treaty of alliance was signed
-Stalin DID NOT want the treaty BUT signed after 2 months of negotiating

-Korean war dragged on because of Stalins unwillingness to reach a compromise
-Mao complained due to Soviets demanding payment for the materials they gave to the chinese

-Highlighted how cooperation between china and the ussr was not as strong as publicly believed
1954- Taiwan
-Mao wanted to test the USA’s commitment to Taiwan by shelling the islands of quemoy
-Eisenhower suggested nuclear weapons to be used if Taiwan were to be threatened

-China is slowly becoming a pain for the ussr

-The USA is committed to defending Taiwan
1956- communist ‘split’
-Relations= damaged due to Krushchev’s secret speech + his policy of peaceful co-existence

-Sino-Soviet relations were further deteriorating
-Mao saw krushchev’s actions as ideological heresy- betraying the communist belief
-Chinese saw themselves as ideologically purist

-Mao believed they could use the satellite as a tool to push the US to the brink
-He wasn’t afraid of nuclear war

China publicly humiliates the USSR at a conference of communist parties

-Soviets visit china in hopes of de-escalating tension, BUT Mao accusing Soviets of betraying the communist movement

Increase in tensions as Mao ordered the build up of troop manoeuvres after seeing US support for Taiwanese nationalists
-Mao backed down

-‘Great Leap Forward’
-Mao no longer wants to be reliant on the USSR and wants to become independent

-China experienced wide-spread famine
-Mao stepped down as state chairman of the PRC
-30 million Chinese died

-Soviets withdraw nuclear scientists in hopes that the Chinese wont be able to develop their own nuclear weapons

-China detonated its first A-bomb

-Sino-India war broke out on the Tibetan border between china and India
-Full scale fighting broke out on the 10th of Oct 1962 and ended with PRC victory 20th Nov
1962 Cuban missile crisis
-Mao publicly humiliates the USSR once again for Krushchev’s handling of the Cuban missile crisis
